Robert L. Austen, 94

RUSHVILLE — Robert L. Austen, 94, a lifelong Rush County resident, passed away June 20, 2013, in Rushville.

He was born Nov. 27, 1918, in Rush County to Harley and Beulah (Jinks) Austen. Bob was a 1936 graduate of New Salem High School. He married Mary F. Todd Dec. 14, 1947; she preceded him in death Aug. 23, 1989.

Bob owned the Amish Cheese House in Metamora since 1977. Before owning the Amish Cheese House, Bob had retired out of the field of Artificial Insemination where he worked for 42 years. He began with the ABS (Artificial Breeding Service) in 1947 and made 100,000 inseminations during his career.  His area of interest was primarily dairy cattle. He worked with ABS, Carter Industries and Curtiss Breeding Industries. Bob was a member of Andersonville Masonic Lodge #96 F&AM and a member of Andersonville Christian Church. He loved his Cincinnati Reds, gardening, his fruit trees, cats and his cheese house. He had “cut a lot of cheese” over the past 36 years!

Bob is survived by companion, Karen Tibbs of Rush County; step daughter, Peni Cranston of Florida; grandsons, Austin and Justin Cranston;and a sister, Ruth Ann and husband Floyd Gruell of Rush County.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 26 at Moster Mortuary, Rushville, where friends are welcome to visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 25.  Andersonville Masonic Lodge will provide Masonic services at 7 p.m. Tuesday. John Wall will preside and burial will be in Rushville’s East Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Boy’s Town, Inc.
