Rex A. Tranbarger, 85

RUSHVILLE — Rex A. Tranbarger, 85, of Indianapolis, passed away June 17, 2013.

He was born June 18, 1927, to John A. and Edith W. Ellett Tranbarger.  

A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Rex was a 1944 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal-Japan. Rex attended Purdue University and Butler University, where he received his B.S. Degree in Management  He married Lavada E. Liggett Sept. 14, 1952, and was employed as a Revenue Officer for the IRS, retiring in 1987.

Rex was a member of Tuxedo Park Baptist Church for 71 years, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, trustee and choir member. He was a 32 degree Mason, and a 63 year member of the Scottish Rite and Englewood Masonic Lodge No. 715. He was a past Commander of American Legion Post #220 and past member of Toast Masters International. He also enjoyed memberships in the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), Aero Club of Indianapolis, Experimental Aircraft Association and Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association. Rex had his private pilot’s license and was part owner of a Grumman Tiger aircraft. Rex and Lavada enjoyed traveling, one of the highlights being two trips to the Holy Land.

Visitation will be from 4 until the time of service at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington Street. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at Hannegan Cemetery, Rushville.

Rex is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lavada E. Tranbarger; brother, Ray (Sharon) Tranbarger; sisters-in-law, Betty Jean (Jim) Martin, Lois Liggett, Wanda Liggett; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers-in-laws.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tuxedo Park Baptist Church (www.shirleybrothers.com).
