---- — Harlan F. Fortmeyer, 90, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 at a local hospital. Harlan was born on a farm in Fairview, Kan., on Aug. 31, 1923 to Walter and Emma (Bolte) Fortmeyer. His father died a year later and his mother brought him and his brother back to Indiana. He attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School and after high school he and his family moved to a farm near Jonesville.

Elsie was born on a farm near Jonesville; she attended St Paul’s Lutheran School and Columbus High School. Elsie met Harlan in 1947 and they were married at St. Paul’s in Jonesville on Feb. 19, 1950.

They lived on a farm until March 1961 when they were forced to move for the construction of Interstate 65. They moved to a Dairy Farm in Shelby County where they raised Registered Jersey’s. Their two sons Steven and David were in 4-H and showed in Jersey shows in county, district, state and national shows. All the family was active members of the Indiana Jersey Cattle Club for many years. Both boys worked and lived in Shelbyville. Elsie worked at the Kroger Store in Shelbyville as cashier and in the office until moving to their home on Lake Pineda, Ark., in March 1989. Both enjoyed the lake, Hot Springs Village and Arkansas mountains very much.

Harlan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elsie; his two sons, Steven (Dinah) Fortmeyer and David Fortmeyer; four grandchildren, Christopher, Linsey, Casey, and Joyce; one great-grandchild, Josie; four nephews, Bill, Tim, Phillip and Trimpe; and one niece Dorcas.

Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 9 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., with the funeral service starting at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Hot Springs Village. Burial will be at CedarVale Cemetery.
