Helen Elizabeth Johnson Moore, 93

Helen Elizabeth Johnson Moore, 93, died Jan. 4, 2014 at her residence. She was born Dec. 19, 1920, the daughter of John B. Johnson and Mary Amelia Custer Johnson in Rush County.

She lived in Rush County most of her life, but grew up un Brookville (1931-1938); graduating from Brookville High School in 1938 and has a BS and a MS degree in Education from Indiana University in 1972 and 1973.

She was married to Harry Evan Moore, now deceased, son of Frank Hyatt and Alpha Retherford Moore on May 15, 1954. They had one son, William Randolph (Randy) Moore, now deceased and a daughter-in-law, Karen L. Moore survives as well as an adopted daughter (a niece) Martha Hiti Strobl and her daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Friederike Strobl and Rebecca Anna Maria Strobl.

Helen is survived by sisters, Anna Belle Johnson, Oceanside, Calif., Margarete Dare Whiteman, West College Corner, and Martha Josephine Shea, Brookville; brothers, Richard F. Johnson, Waianae, Ohua, Hawaii and Charles Robert Johnson, Anderson; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters Catherine Theresa Fohl Craig, and Clara Lorraine Hiti and three brothers Walter William Johnson, Howard Eugene Johnson and John Philip Johnson.

Helen was official court reporter for the Franklin and Union counties Circuit Court 1950-60, and since that time, was a free lance reporter, taking depositions and convention verbatim for many state and national organizations.

Helen served during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corp and following discharge was a Charter Member of the Women Marines Association, serving as National President in 1966-68, also as President of Indiana Chapter.

Helen was a member of both the American Legion Post 77 and the American Legion Auxiliary, holding many Unit, District, Department and National Offices and served as Convention Reporter since 1960. Other organizations include Indiana German Heritage Society, serving as State President; Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Business and Professional Women plus several Historical societies.
