Merlin Leo "Coach" Herbert, 81

---- — Merlin Leo "Coach" Herbert, 81, a life long Rush County resident, passed away Jan. 1, 2014 in Greenfield. He was born March 27, 1932 in Mays to John and Rosie (DeWitt) Herbert. Merlin was a 1950 graduate of Mays School. He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. He married Barbara Lee Hollars on Sept. 29, 1951 and she survives.

Merlin worked for Schnadig Corporation for 33 years. He retired as a supervisor. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #150 where he was a Past Commander. He was a Grandknight of the K of C and a member of the Rushville Eagles Lodge. Merlin loved camping, football, basketball, boating, NASCAR racing and drinking a cold beer with his family and many friends.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, of Rushville, he is survived by sons, Rick and wife Sally Herbert of Prescot, Ariz., Larry and wife Pennie Herbert and Mark and wife Kimberly Herbert all of Rushville; daughters, Marilyn and husband Allen King of Milroy and Lisa and husband Will Flannery of Rushville; brothers, Ellis and wife Flossie Herbert of Rushville, Norman and wife Edna Herbert of Shelbyville and Jerry and wife Joann Herbert of Milroy; a sister, Fern Hodson of Shelbyville; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Earl, John, Carlos and Landon; and sisters, Pearl Hemmingway and Betty Colvin.

Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 at Moster Mortuary, Rushville with Rev. Jeremy Greis presiding. Friends are welcome to visit at the mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6. A Rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. The Rush County Veteran's Honor Guard will provide military rites.
