Dr. Lowell C. Rose, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 at Bloomington Hospital.

Born Jan. 22, 1930 in Rushville, he was the son of Earl and Vivian (Carroway) Rose, both deceased.

Dr. Rose graduated in 1952 from Ball State University with a B.S. in Social Studies and Business Education, in 1955 from Purdue University with a M.A. in Social Studies, and received his Ph.D. in School Administration with a minor in Social Studies from Purdue University in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He taught Social Studies at several schools over the years including North Central High School in Indianapolis and DeMotte Junior-Senior High School. He was a member of the School Survey Team at Purdue University, was Director of Research, Information and Testing for the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township, and served as lecturer in School Administration for Butler University. He served as assistant superintendent of the Kokomo-Center Township Consolidated School Corporation from 1963 to 1964 and as superintendent from 1964 to 1967. He then worked as executive secretary of the Indiana School Boards Association and was an associate professor in the School of Education at Indiana University. He was an adjunct professor with the Indiana University School of Education from 1971 to present. He also served as executive director of Phi Delta Kappa International from 1971 to 1995 and as acting executive director of the Indiana Urban Schools Association from 1996 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 1999. He received numerous awards and honors during his career including being named Distinguished Alumnus of Ball State University (1987), Outstanding Alumni Award from Purdue’s Educational Administration Alumni Association (1990), Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue’s School of Education (1991), and Outstanding Educator Award from the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (1995). He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1995 and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Lonergan) Rose of Bloomington; one daughter, Nancy (Mrs. William) Mitchell of Naperville, Ill.; two sons, David Rose of Bloomington and Bryan Rose (and wife Kathryn) of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Garnet Rose, and three brothers, Garett, Keith and Dale Rose.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Catholic Center in Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.
