Weather makes driving a challenge

RUSHVILLE — A series of brief snow storms passed through the county between Thursday afternoon and Monday and a number of motorists found the additional frozen moisture made driving challenging.

Wind-driven snow caused near white-out conditions for motorists Thursday and was a factor in a traffic accident in the 4000 block of East SR 44. According to Indiana State Trooper Aaron Edwards, Debra Callahan, 42, no address given, was westbound when her vehicle crossed the centerline in the 4700 block of East SR 44 and struck a concrete driveway marker before recrossing the state road and coming to a stop.

Callahan was treated at the scene.

Her 2005 Dodge sustained extensive damage to the driver’s side of the car.

Throughout the weekend officers and medical responders were busy with multiple slide-off, property damage and minor injury accidents.

Kevin Alysworth Jr. and a minor teenage female escaped serious injury when the vehicle they were traveling in rolled multiple times in the 4500 block of South Base Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to Rush County deputy sheriff Steve Houston, Alysworth was traveling southbound when his vehicle left the east side of the county road and struck a glancing blow to a REMC power pole before entering a field and rolling multiple times.

Prior to law enforcement and medical personnel’s arrival the Rushville teens exited the vehicle and went to a nearby farm house for assistance.

As driving conditions diminish driving speeds need to be adjusted. Speed limit signs are for optimum driving conditions.

Motorists should check their windshield washer fluid levels and make sure their wiper blades are in good working condition.

Additional winter weather is in the forecast for coming days and care should be taken when traveling even short distances; allow additional time to arrive at you destination, reduce vehicle speed and leave additional room between vehicles.

In the event your vehicle begins to slide, it is recommended that drivers take their foot off the gas, avoid hitting the brakes and steer in the direction of the slide.

Tire tread and air pressure should also be checked so vehicles do not loose traction on wet or slick road surfaces.

It is recommended that each vehicle should contain a winter emergency kit with enough non-perishable food to last for three days and three gallons of water (one gallon for each day).

Also include a battery-operated radio and flashlight with additional batteries for each.

Extra clothing should be contained in the kit including an additional pair of gloves, hat and a blanket. Other necessary items include a list of emergency phone contacts, a copy of a photo ID and any medicines taken on a daily basis.
