Members of the Local Coordinating Council (LCC) met for the final time of 2012 and were reintroduced to a familiar person. Former chief of police and mayor Bob Bridges, who currently serves on the city council, rejoined the Rushville Police Department in the capacity of reserve officer and was named the new D.A.R.E. officer in September.
Bridges, a 25-year veteran of the Rushville Police Department, recently completed training and will begin working with area fifth-graders in January, 2013.
Bridges is familiar with the D.A.R.E. program; he was the county’s first D.A.R.E. officer in 1992 when he was chief of police.
The program was initially 17 weeks in duration but has since been condensed into a 10-week program.
According to Bridges, the D.A.R.E. effort has changed throughout the years and currently focuses on teaching students the importance of abstaining from alcohol and tobacco use.
“A new aspect of the D.A.R.E. program now also focuses on bullying. We know it is a real problem and we now teach defining bullying and how to deal with it,” Bridges said.
Following the presentation, Rushville Consolidated High School Assistant Principal Rob Hadley informed members that he would be stepping down as LCC coordinator.
Hadley has served as coordinator for the past four years and he explained that he will assist with the transition once a new coordinator is named.
In other matters, Hadley said that during the year the LCC financially assisted a number of organizations by allocating $16,594.14.
The LCC is comprised of teachers, administrators, law enforcement, local businesses and others and is designed to keep Rush County schools safe and drug free.
Funding for the organization comes from by state monies generated from court ordered drug and alcohol countermeasure fees.
