Rushville resident Jay Carpenter, 51, sustained what were believed to be serious injury when he fell approximately 15 feet while removing a tree from a yard in the 800 block of West Third Street, Tuesday afternoon.
Carpenter, along with Mike Glover and Al Moore, were working together to remove the large tree. According to Glover, Carpenter had been removing trees for a number of years and was unrestrained in the bow of the tree after having cutting a large branch when it swung back and struck the man causing him to lose his balance and fall.
“He cut the large branch and it swung out away from the trunk and then swung back, hit him and just knocked him out,” Glover said.
Nearby resident Melody Glover said she heard the chain saw followed by what she described as a loud thud and then silence.
Glover called 911 from his cell phone immediately following the accident after Carpenter said he could not move his extremities.
After stabilizing his injuries, Carpenter was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital and to a waiting air ambulance for transport to an Indianapolis trauma center. Although the full extent of his injuries is unknown, Glover and Moore said Wednesday that their friend was undergoing surgery for a spinal injury.
Responding to the scene were units from the RPD, RMH Ambulance and the RFD.
