---- — A report of a serious injury accident between a CSX train and a vehicle was received at the Rushville Police Department shortly after 3 p.m. Friday. The call resulted in multiple emergency departments responding to the 400 block of North Perkins Street.
As a result of the collision, both the driver, Thomas Alexander, 26, of Rushville, and passenger Anthony Huffman, 19, also of Rushville, sustained serious injuries resulting in the pair being airlifted to an Indianapolis trauma center.
According to witnesses in the area at the time of the accident, Alexander was northbound on Perkins Street when he disregarded red flashing lights at the railroad crossing and entered the path of the westbound train.
The CSX train struck the smaller vehicle on the passenger side and the impact forced the smaller vehicle northwest across the intersection. The truck became airborne and struck a nearby fence and residence before flipping at least once and then coming to rest upright nearly 150 feet from the place of impact, north of the railroad tracks. A camper shell on the truck came to rest 160 feet from the point of impact on the south side of the tracks.
Alexander sustained an unspecified head injury, numerous cuts and contusions and other unknown injuries.
Huffman, who took the brunt of the impact with the train, sustained a serious right arm injury and other unspecified injuries.
Responders worked nearly 30 minutes to remove Huffman from the vehicle.
Following treatment at the scene, both were transported to Rush Memorial Hospital and a short time later airlifted by a pair of Statflight ambulances to an Indianapolis trauma center.
According to Rushville Chief of Police Craig Tucker, because of the severity of their injuries investigators have been unable to speak to either Alexander or Huffman.
Both were listed in critical condition Saturday.
“The incident is still under investigation by the RPD,” Tucker said.
Responding to the accident were multiple units from the RPD, Rush County Sheriff’s Department, Rushville Fire Department, RMH Ambulance and the Indiana State Police.
