To better serve and respond to Rush County residents with special needs in the event of a life threatening emergency or disaster, the Rush County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Rush County Health Department are jointly conducting a “Citizen Care Project.”
When a fire, flood, tornado, power outage or hazardous material spill occurs it can be an especially harrowing experience for individuals with special needs when it is time to evacuate their residence.
Rush County EMA Director Chuck Kemker said all too frequently when a emergency situation arises first responders arrive on the scene with little or no information regarding the special needs of the residents in a home or residential facility.
“Some residents may have medical or physical disabilities that may require special equipment, training or additional manpower to safely and quickly evacuate them. Knowing some basic information ahead of time could make a lifesaving difference,” Kemker said.
He continued by saying that as a result of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the request for pertinent information is being made on a volunteer basis only, and that no personal finance or other confidential information is requested. In addition, with the exception of local health providers and emergency responders, none of the information obtained will be released.
“It is not necessary to have a special needs individual living in your household to have emergency information listed in the system,” Kemker said.
There is no charge to be included in this program.
