Carrier saves woman and house

RUSHVILLE — Postal Carrier Mike Pierce, formerly of the Rushville Post Office and now in Niceville, Fla., was in the right place at the right time recently.

During a normal day of delivering in a neighboring city, Mike was approaching the home of Ms. Rowe on Chaffee Street when he heard someone talking, but he could not understand what she was saying.

When he listened, he found that a woman was saying that she broke her hip and could he help her?

The woman told Pierce that she had left something on the stove and was sure it was burning.

The carrier went inside and the kitchen was full of smoke. He opened the windows and retrieved the lady’s phone book and phone so she could call her daughter.

While they were waiting for help, she told Pierce that she had been outside for an hour and a half.

Not only was he able to help a lady in distress, he saved the home from certain disaster, Postmaster Kelly Lanning said.

“Mike will soon return to the Rushville Post Office to resume his duties as a neighborhood Postal carrier. Hopefully, he won’t have to rescue anyone in Indiana, but if the challenge becomes necessary he will be ready,” Lanning added.
