Indiana Sixth District U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (R) spent an hour Thursday morning hearing from constituents at the Corner Restaurant in downtown Rushville as part of a series of similar meetings he’s conducting throughout the district.
The idea, he said, is to meet and speak with Hoosiers first-hand about their concerns and thoughts on various issues.
Near the conclusion of his local visit the Congressman said one topic seemed to be on nearly everyone’s mind: President Obama’s call for new gun control measures.
That’s something, he said, he and the president don’t see eye to eye on.
“I want to stand strong for Second Amendment rights,” he said. “We’re all saddened by tragedies that occur like the recent one in Connecticut, but the answer to that is not to ban guns. History shows that the only thing guns bans do effectively is keep guns away from law abiding citizens. I want everyone in the Sixth Congressional district, particularly everyone here in Rush County, to know that I will stand strong to protect our Second Amendment rights.”
Messer also said that getting this country’s financial house in order is a priority that’s going to require a lot of work.
“We do have a lot of work to do. I did support the legislation that just passed that says the United States Senate is going to have to pass a budget. Essentially, the Senate hasn’t passed a budget in over four years, and if they don’t pass a budget this time then they won’t get paid. No budget, no pay.”
The Congressman added that a key part of the budget debate involves what direction the country is going to take.
“Over the next two months, part of the big debate is going to be, Are we finally going to work to make government smaller? Everywhere I go and everyone I talk to, I try to help them understand that this is not just about nickels and dimes, this is about the future for the young people in this country, whether or not they will grow up in a country where they have a chance to succeed. ... As a congressman, I’m going to do my best to make sure we stop spending money that we absolutely don’t have to.”
