2 accidents, 4 vehicles, 2 injuries

RUSHVILLE — A report of a rollover accident in the 7000 block of South SR 3 was received shortly before 3 p.m. Friday.

Responders found an upright van in a side ditch where it came to rest after rolling multiple times.

According to investigators from the Rush County Sheriff’s Department, a sleepy driver, identified as Daryl Miller, 56, of Batesville, was northbound when he left the east side of the state road. After entering the ditch the van clipped a Duke Energy pole before rolling at least three times.

Following treatment at the scene for unspecified injuries, Miller was transported to RMH for further treatment.

As a result of the initial accident and investigation, SR 3 was reduced to a single lane. The travel constraints led to a second accident moments later south of the initial accident scene.

The second accident involved three vehicles. A 1998 Dodge Stratus driven by K.C. Griffin, 21, of Arlington, failed to realize traffic had stopped in front of his northbound vehicle. Griffin’s vehicle struck the rear of a 2002 Dodge Ram truck driven by Joshua Baker, 29, of Richmond. The force of the impact caused Baker’s vehicle to strike a 2006 BMW driven by Daniel Sheridan, 60, of Anderson.

“I was traveling about 60 mph when I took my eyes off the road for a second. When I looked up the truck was right there. At that point there was nothing I could do,” Griffin told investigators.

Griffin suffered an unspecified neck and back injury. Following treatment at the scene he was transported to RMH Hospital.

Baker and a passenger in his vehicle were not injured nor was Sheridan or a passenger in his vehicle.

Investigating officer deputy Duane Raab said that all things considered each of the drivers and their passengers were fortunate that they did not sustain more severe injuries.
