OPO results in 108 citations

Two arrested on felony drug charges

RUSHVILLE — The county-wide Operation Pullover conducted by the Rush County Sheriff’s Department and the Rushville Police Department during Memorial Day weekend resulted in the law enforcement agencies issuing a combined 108 citations. Officers also handed out an additional 101 warnings for various moving and equipment violations.

Deputy Duane Raab of the RCSD said the annual OPO blitz serves as a reminder to buckle up when driving.

“It is a good thing and serves as an annual reminder to encourage compliance with Indiana’s safety belt law. The ‘Click it or Ticket’ program enables us to concentrate on seatbelt compliance which, without a doubt, saves lives. That is out objective, to encourage safety belt use and make our roads and highways safer,” Raab said.

The effort also resulted in two arrests that led to nine felony citations and 10 misdemeanor citations from officers of the RPD.

The afternoon of May 25, while working the OPO, RPD officer Michael Ervin observed a driver not wearing a seatbelt in the 200 block of South Main Street. After initiating a traffic stop and speaking with the driver, officer Ervin detected the odor of burned marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A short time later the driver admitted that there had been marijuana used in the vehicle earlier in the day although not at the time of the stop.

At that time officer Ervin and his K9 partner Axel did a vehicle walk-around and the drug detecting K9 displayed an indication of narcotics in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle followed and Indianapolis resident Matthew A. Duchesne, 28, was charged with possession of cocaine (3 grams), a class “A” felony; possession of cocaine within 1000 feet of a public park, school or family housing unit, a class “B” felony; possession of cocaine, a class “D” felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a class “D” felony; possession of a legend drug, a class “D” felony; possession of marijuana, a class “A” misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia, a class “A” misdemeanor; operating a motor vehicle after driving privileges were suspended (with a prior conviction), a class “A” misdemeanor; operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a class “C” misdemeanor; and OWI with a  controlled substance or its metabolite in the body, a class “C” misdemeanor.

Three days later, on the evening of May 28, officer Brent Campbell made a similar traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of  Glenwood resident Samuel D. Stanley on various drug charges; possession of methamphetamine, a class “D” felony; possession of meth within 1000 feet of a public park, school or family housing unit, a class “B” felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, a class “A” misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a class “A” misdemeanor; operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a class “C” misdemeanor; OWI with a controlled substance or its metabolite in the body class, a “C” misdemeanor; and operating a motor vehicle after driving privileges were suspended.
