FFA members attend National Convention

The 86th National FFA Convention recently concluded in Louisville, Ky., with the local Rushville Consolidated High School chapter well represented during the 3-day event. Prior to this year, the previous seven annual events had been hosted in Indianapolis. This year, 18 local members traveled two hours south with many competing at the national level.

RCHS Ag instructor and FFA sponsor Blair Orme said he was proud of all the local chapter members both past and present and that the Rushville FFA chapter has been recognized on the national level in recent years. Orme continued by saying that many of the life skills members develop as a result of participating in FFA are used long after their high school days are behind them such as public speaking, leadership and teamwork. According to recorder for the RCHS chapter Mason Gordon, the theme for the 2013 event was “Ignite” and the National officers planned sessions around that central theme. Nearly 63,000 of the organizations nearly 540,000 members converged on Louisville from all over the world were on hand to compete, attend training sessions and hear from nationally known speakers. A highlight of the three-day event is a concert and according to Gordon, this year’s concert did not disappoint with Janna Kramer and Dierks Bentley headlining.

“With all the fun, Rushville also went to Louisville to take care of business. Rushville sent three teams to compete in national contest,” Gordon said.

Local members Emma Harpring, Devin Lux, Shawn Delay, Elizabeth Field, Nate Buening, Jordan Linville, and Laura Smith competed in Novice Parlimentary Procedure. The Dairy Foods team of Caysi Johnson, Alicia Cole, Jill Yager and Michaela Orme competed with 37 teams from all over the country and received a bronze medal. The Meats Evaluation team of Tyler Dawson, Caroline Kuhn, Becca Riggs, and Mason Gordon competed with teams from 47 different states and received a silver medal.
