After his initial military training, he started his law enforcement career January, 1982 when he was hired by then Sheriff Marvin Hedrick to serve as a jail officer with the Rush County Sheriff’s Department. He left the sheriff’s office to serve as a patrolman with the Rushville Police Department. In September, 1987 he started his 26-year career with the Indiana State Excise Police.
During his Excise Police career he has served as an officer and is currently a lieutenant and the commander of the Indianapolis Field Office which serves 11 counties in east-central Indiana. His responsibilities include the supervision of two field supervisors, 11 police officers and an administrative assistant.
McMahan, a lifelong resident of Rush County, resides in Posey Township with his wife Brenda. He has two sons, Scott of Rushville and Rick of Indianapolis. He attended Arlington Elementary and Junior High schools and graduated from Rushville Consolidated High School in 1981.
