Motorcyclist seriously injured in collision

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. Saturday, a report of a collision between a motorcycle and a truck was received at the Rush County Sheriff’s Department and resulted in multiple agencies responding to the intersection of Base Road and SR 244 east of Milroy.

The motorcyclist, Gary L. Martin Jr., 41, of Laurel, sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.

According to investigating officer deputy Steve Houston of the RCSD, Martin was southbound on Base Road and apparently failed to see an eastbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Randal Dierckman, 20, of Greensburg. Martin entered the intersecting roads and struck Dierckman’s vehicle.

After striking the left side of the truck behind the door, the bike spun and struck the driver side door, dislodging Martin from his bike.

Martin, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained multiple injuries. Following treatment at the scene he was transported to the Milroy Elementary School and a waiting Lifeline air ambulance for transport to an Indianapolis trauma center.

The full extent of his injuries was unknown at press time. Dierckman was not injured and did not require medical attention.

Traffic on SR 244 was closed for nearly 90 minutes as a result of the accident, investigation and cleanup process.

Responding to the scene were multiple units from the RCSD, Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department, RMH Ambulance and Davis Towing.
