EMA advisory board meets

---- — Members of the Rush County EMA Advisory Board met earlier this week and EMA director Chuck Kemker gained approval for the Rush County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP).

The plan establishes a basis for coordinating emergency services in the county in the event of a disaster that required supplemental assistance. The plan will next be taken before the Rush County Commissioners for final approval.

According to Kemker, the CEMP plan covers five phases of emergency management: mitigation, prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. Kemker next turned his attention to distribution of the plan to the individuals and businesses involved.

In other business, Kemker said that the EMA is partnering with the Rush County Health Department for an October 9 health fair. During the fair, county and local residents with disabilities will be given an emergency backpack containing a number of survival items.

The EMA director continued by saying that in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, all residents should have an emergency kit with enough supplies for up to a week.

While depending on the severity of the emergency, the county needs to be prepared for a week to 30 days prior to receiving state or federal assistance.

Talk next turned to commodity points of distribution (C-PODS) in the event of an emergency.

C-PODs are a part of the state logistics plan and a necessary part of the plan to meet resource support to distribute food and water to masses until mass feeding operations can begin.

Kemker said it is important that local EMA organizations provide a means for the C-PODs along with public health departments (PH-PODs) which will dispense antibiotics and/or vaccines.

In a final matter, the county is still seeking volunteer members for a Damage Assessment Team. Those interested are asked to contact Kemker at the EMA office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 765-932-8391.
