Former ISP trooper injured in head-on collision

Connersville resident and former ISP trooper Jesus Gilberto Sanchez, 49, sustained serious injuries resulting in him being air-lifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a Wednesday morning accident in the 3200 block of West U.S. 52.

Rush County deputy sheriff Duane Raab said Sanchez was traveling westbound on his 2011 Kawasaki three- wheel motorcycle. Ronald L. Rhodes, 64, of Shelby County was traveling eastbound . Both drivers were behind trucks in their respective lanes and were unable to see each others approaching vehicle. After a westbound truck cleared the entrance of Pioneer Hybrid Seed, Rhodes crossed the centerline into the westbound lane to enter the agricultural business and struck the motorcycle.

“After a westbound truck passed, Rhodes entered the westbound lane to enter Pioneer and failed to see the rapidly approaching motorcycle from the east. There was no chance at that point for either driver to avoid what was essentially a head-on collision,” Raab said.

The force of the impact dislodged Sanchez from his bike with its driver coming to rest nearly 25 yards from the point of impact.

Following treatment at the scene, Sanchez was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital and a waiting Lifeline air ambulance for transport to the Indianapolis trauma center.

The impact caused the airbags in Rhodes’ vehicle to deploy resulting in what were described as minor injuries to the Shelbyville man. Following treatment at the scene he was transported to RMH for non-life threatening injuries.

Assisting at the scene were units from the Indiana State Police, RCSD, Rushville Police Department, Rushville Township, RMH Ambulance and Davis towing.
