Three residential fires under investigation

Local firefighters were kept busy during the recent holiday weekend with three residential fires being responsible for displacing multiple families

A fire in the 800 block of West 10th Street was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday . Responding firefighters from the Rushville Fire Department found the fire to be in the kitchen area of the home. According to fire chief Chuck Jenkins, the blaze was contained to the kitchen area of the home, although throughout the house substantial smoke damage occured.

Sunday afternoon, a report of a fully engulfed trailer fire at 965 West Old SR 44 resulted in volunteers from the Rushville Township Volunteer Department requesting mutual aid from the RFD and Posey Township. Despite the efforts of the firefighters, the structure was completely destroyed.

A multi-dwelling residential fire at 803 North Morgan Street, Rushville was received at the city dispatch center at 8:05 p.m. Sunday.

“The fire was contained to the roof area of the structure,” fire chief Chuck Jenkins said.

The chief continued by saying that Lt. Kirk Trebley is the lead investigator in the fire and as of Monday afternoon no cause for the blaze had been determined.

Fire efforts were hampered briefly in battling the blaze due to multiple roofs on the structure.

“The structure initially had a flat roof; however, a second roof had been added and fire fighters had to fight the fire by cutting holes in both the original roof and the roof from the top to squeeze the fire out,” Jenkins said.

No injuries were reported as a result of extinguishing the multiple blazes and all of the fires are still under investigation with no known causes being released by press time Monday.
