Voter Guide: County Council District 2

Rushville Republican

---- — With the May 6 Primary just days away, the Rushville Republican staff asked candidates in contested races to answer some questions to help area voters in the selection process.

The following is in the race for County Council District 2.

Jerry Kent: Republican

1.What do you feel are the responsibilities of this office?

The County Council is responsible for the financial powers of the county and is the checks and balances for the Board of Commissioners. The duties include setting the tax rates and tax levies within state law, setting wages and benefits of employees, and establishing the annual budget for the county. The Council is responsible for establishing spending appropriations and administering all funds for the county taxpayers.

2. Why are you seeking this office?

I am seeking re-election to this office because I feel the local government needs to offer the county services in a financially responsible manner. I have tried to study the needs and issues of our county and find ways to serve the needs while keeping our county expenses to a minimum. I feel I have developed a good working relationship with our county officials and have worked well with both city and county officials in the past. I would like to continue working for our county taxpayers in the future.

3. What challenges does this office face during the coming term?

I expect the next 4 years will find our county funding getting even tighter. Building and administering a budget within legislated tax caps will be our biggest challenge. We are continually being ordered to do more from the State and Federal government with no additional funding which will require us to continually look for ways to consolidate necessary services.

4. Why should citizens vote for you?

I am asking citizens in Posey, Walker, Anderson and Orange Townships to vote for me because I promise to make my decisions based upon what I feel is the best decision for our voters. I feel I have the experience and the knowledge to weigh all issues carefully and make educated decisions for our taxpayers. I would appreciate your vote on May 6.

Steve McCorkle: Republican

1. What do you feel are the responsibilities of this office?

Provide citizens of Rush County with helping further money.

2. Why are you seeking this office?

I have been a 50-plus year volunteer of the Andersonville Volunteer Fire Department and 22 years as a Reserve Deputy. I love this county and love to serve the people.

3.What challenges does this office face during the coming term?

I think there are going to be some major issues, possibly a new jail, repairs to the courthouse and maybe the city and county working together.

4. Why should citizens vote for you?

I am not a politician. I have the best listening ears in Rush County.
