Dinner and movie hosted by Rush County Historical Society

A native of Rushville will be honored during a dinner and move night hosted by the Rush County Historical Society.

Carmelita Geraghty was a star during the 1920’s and 30s in mostly silent films. According to Wikipedia, she was born in Indiana but was educated mostly in New York City. She went on to be a graduate of the Hollywood High School and was in the graduating class of 1919. Though her parents wished her to stay at home, she went off to become a movie star. Her father in particular was slow to approve of his daughter’s new employment. Geraghty achieved a measure of success as a Mack Sennett featured player.

She started work out as an extra in the early 1920s, using a fictitious name until getting her big break. She was selected as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars of 1924. She soon became a leading actress, including a co-starring role with Virginia Valli in The Pleasure Garden (1925), the first film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. She played golfer Jordan Baker in the first film version (1926) of The Great Gatsby.

The dinner and movie will be held at the First Baptist Church, 1431 West US 52. Dinner, catered by Lori Hoeing, will begin at 6 p.m. The 80 minute film from 1927, “My Best Girl” will follow at 7 p.m. Since the film is silent, it will be accompanied with piano music by Mike Woods.

“My Best Girl” features Mary Pickford, Charles “Buddy” Rogers and Rushville’s very own Carmelita Geraghty.

Cost for the evening is $14 for Historical Society Members and $15 for non-members. Reservations are due May 1. RSVP to Phyllis Fecher at 765-932-1810 or pfecher@frontier.com.

Contact Kate Thurston at 765-932-2222 ext. 105.
