Dalton sentenced in meth case

RUSHVILLE — Chhoeun G. Dalton was sentenced this week in Rush Superior Court to an eight year sentence after pleading guilty to his role in manufacturing methamphetamine in Carthage on April 14 of this year.

Dalton pleaded guilty to dealing in methamphetamine, a class "B" felony.

Under a plea agreement negotiated by Rush County Prosecutor Philip Caviness, Dalton will serve four years in prison and then serve four years on probation. As part of the sentence, Dalton will be required to complete a substance abuse program as well.

The case began on the evening of April 13, 2011 with an apparent drug overdose in Knightstown.

The victim told law enforcement officers about methamphetamine being manufactured and sold in Carthage, and led officers to obtain and serve a search warrant on the residence of Kristen Ruble and Joseph Roland, where Rush County Sheriff's Department deputies Doug Keith and Terry Drake located a meth lab.

Ruble and Roland then led officers to a residence at 10 S. Walnut Street, Carthage, which was the residence of Steven Dalton, Teresa Dalton and Chhoeun Dalton.

After obtaining a search warrant for that residence, officers found multiple active meth labs, leading to the charges in this case.

"Meth is a big problem in Rush County, especially with the ability of individuals to manufacture small amounts in their residences and even vehicles," Caviness said. "This case required several law enforcement agencies to work together; the Knightstown Police, Rush County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police all worked quickly and coordinated everything very well. As a result, each crime scene led like dominos to the next, and we have been successful on three of these cases so far."

Joseph Roland pleaded guilty in September, and Kristen Ruble and Chhoeun

Dalton had their change of plea and sentencing hearings this week.

Steven Dalton, the father of Chhoeun Dalton, is scheduled for a change of plea and sentencing hearing in November.

Teresa Dalton remains set for trial in early 2012.
