VP robbery suspect faces additional charges

Accomplice arrested

RUSHVILLE — Legal woes for Jesse J. Sparks, 20, of Laurel, increased earlier this week when additional charges of theft and armed robbery were filed against him in Ripley County.

Sparks, who has been incarcerated in the Rush County Jail since Feb. 7 on unrelated charges, was formally charged April 9 with felony robbery while armed with a deadly weapon (class “B” felony) and theft (class “D” felony) in regards to the local armed robbery of the Village Pantry at 1003 W. Third Street the morning of Feb. 7.

Sparks has also been charged with two additional counts of armed robbery and theft in and near Batesville.

According to RPD Detective Lt. Randy Meek, an accomplice to the crimes, Carl Moore Jr., no age available, of Decatur County is also currently in custody at the Decatur County Jail.

An unidentified clerk at the Rushville Village Pantry dialed 911 shortly before 2 a.m. Feb. 7 and informed the Rush County dispatcher that although unharmed she had just been robbed at gunpoint.

The clerk was unable to give officers a direction of travel, but security cameras in the store caught the robbery in progress.

Meek and law enforcement personnel from multiple counties worked tirelessly to bring closure to the case.

“The resolution of this case was made possible by several agencies working together and began when agencies realized that our investigations appeared to be linked,” Meek said.

Officers from the law enforcement agencies met frequently and shared information regarding crimes in their communities. Gradually, the puzzle pieces began to fit together, Meek said following Sparks arrest.
