RUSHVILLE — Local organizers and a number of team members recently met in Rushville City Council Chamber to discuss the 2013 Relay for Life.

This year, the 24-hour event will begin at 6 p.m. June 14 and continue until 6 p.m. the following day.

South Veterans Memorial Park will be the location of the American Cancer Society fundraiser and, according to Julie Mann, this year’s event marks the return of the local Relay to Father’s Day weekend with some minor changes.

“Although we are beginning the Relay at 6 p.m. on Friday, the opening ceremony will be held the following morning,” Mann said.

She continued by saying that the theme for the 2013 event is Rock & Roll, with team themed booths highlighting music of the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s taking center stage.

“We have not yet finalized the order of events as of yet. That will be announced in the near future, although we are still seeking additional teams, participants and sponsors,” Mann said.

As a result of a downturn in the economy in recent years, the Great Lakes Division of the ACS has made revisions in the goal set for Rush County with $35,000 the monetary target figure set for this year’s 24-hour event.

With the exception of the past few years, Rush County has been recognized nationally for their fundraising efforts and organizers hope to return to that status this year.

Team captains meet at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month leading up to the Relay in Council Chambers (located at the Rushville Police Department, 270 West 15th Street).
