---- — After more than 30 years of calling the Rush County Courthouse home, Mental Health America in Rush County has a new home at 939 South SR3, Rushville.

Local MHA director Pat Springman said the Rush County Commissioners tried hard to find space for MHA to continue operating out of the courthouse, but the growth of other programs housed in the three-story structure made moving to a new location necessary.

“Mental Health had no money to pay rent, so I decided to make my father’s (Audley Sizemore) gas station into our new office,” Springman said.

Commissioner Mark Bacon, Bret Turner, Kreigh Springman and Dan Herbert volunteered to help move MHA’s furniture, files, brochures and other materials out of the courthouse and into the old Sizemore building during the latter parts of April.

Volunteers Drew Springman, Margaret Davis and Corbin Huffer then painted the new office space as well as assisting with other improvements. Devon Springman assisted with moving furniture from the back area of the building into the new office and Ed Dickson added the final touch by hand-lettering the door.

Pat Springman even had a new bench constructed and it now sits outside the new MHA office door.

“My dad had an old bench by the gas station door for over 45 years,” Pat explained. “Men would fill their vehicles with gas or eat in my mom’s (Virgie Sizemore) restaurant then stop and sit on the bench with my dad to talk about politics, the weather, fishing or whatever. Over the years it became known as the “liar’s bench.” Now, there’s a new bench and everyone is welcome to stop by and sit on it while they share stories of the past or talk about whatever is on their mind.”

Springman invites the public to stop by and check out Mental Health America in Rush County’s new office; it’s located on the north end of the old Sizemore building. Occupying the south end of the same building is a new business, Still Stylish, a clothing consignment store operated by Springman’s daughter-in-law.

MHA office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and by appointment. Those with questions or concerns can call (765) 932-2004. If there’s no answer leave a message as this phone is checked several times a day.
