Sloan arrested on molestation charges - initial report

RUSHVILLE — Following a Rushville Police Department investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior and contact with minors, Rushville resident Mark Weston Sloan, 61, was arrested without incident shortly after 10 a.m. Monday.

Sloan is charged with a single class “A” felony count of child molestation, two class “C” felony counts of child molestation and a class “D” felony count of sexual battery.

He currently is housed in the Rush County Jail with a $100,000 bond set.

Shortly before noon Tuesday, Sloan was arraigned in Rush Circuit Court on the charges. As is protocol, the court entered a plea of not guilty and a jury trial date was set for May 21.

Rushville Chief of Police Craig Tucker said the RPD investigation centered on sex offenses involving two children, then 6 and 9 years of age.

“As a result of that investigation, Sloan was arrested April 1 at the RPD and remanded to the Rush County Jail on charges of child molestation, a class A felony and class C felony. Sloan was additionally charged with sexual battery, a class D felony,” Tucker said.

The investigation was conducted by Detective Lt. Randy Meek and stemmed from a phone call to the Indiana Department of Child Services Hotline that was received by the local DCS office.

During the course of the investigation it was determined that probable cause had been established to believe Sloan had perpetrated sexual acts against the two unidentified children.

“It is a sad situation when a child is victimized, and situations like these often affect families in a multitude of ways for a very long time. We, the Rushville Police Department, are dedicated to finding the truth in these cases and bringing the responsible parties to justice in hopes of aiding in the healing process in some small way,” Chief Tucker said.

Rush County Prosecutor Phil Caviness said that due to the nature of the charges and for his own safety Sloan is being kept out of the general population at the Rush County Jail.

Caviness continued by saying that all subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
