Community covered bridge picnic planned

Rush County Heritage is issuing an invitation to one and all for an old-fashioned picnic to be held at noon Saturday, July 27 at the Offutt covered bridge.

The group wants to highlight the work they do with a celebration held at a covered bridge they successfully worked to save.

The Offutt bridge is in a lovely spot with a beautiful covered bridge set in a well-kept area. Jim Irvine, the owner of the land surrounding the bridge, is extending a hearty invitation to everyone who would like to come, park, eat, and spend some happy hours there.

Outdoor games for children and adults will be available and there is a small river to enjoy.

Heritage is furnishing hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and table service. Guests will need to bring a covered dish for the pitch-in meal and lawn chairs for their seating.

The people cooking the burgers and hotdogs would appreciate knowing how many are coming, so please let Eleanor Arnold (at 932-5204) know your plans.

The Offutt bridge is northwest of Arlington on Offutt Bridge Road (formerly 475 W) just north of 300 N. Cars coming from Rushville might want to go north on SR 3, turn left on CR 300 N and continue for a few miles. The road to the bridge will be marked with a sign and balloons. Parking will be available at the site of the picnic.

The Rush County Heritage group is an historic preservation group which works to save the historic buildings and areas which are such an important part of Rush County’s past.

Over the years they have been in existence they can point to many successes, including the covered bridges and the Booker T. Washington Community Center. The recent restoration of the Moscow Covered Bridge shows how much Rush County values its heritage.

The group is currently engaged in several projects and continues to be a voice for preserving our past.
