In light of the Sandy Hook School shootings and other tragic events involving weapons on school properties and public venues, most recently the Boston Marathon bombings, local authorities have been placed on notice that a similar event could happen in Rush County.
Earlier this year Rush County EMA Director Chuck Kemker approached Local Coordinating Council members on the idea of forming a committee to begin the formation of an emergency contingency plan.
It is Kemker’s contention the committee should consist of representatives from the local school system as well as emergency response departments such as fire, law enforcement and medical personnel to begin the formation of a emergency contingency plan.
The Rush County LCC is a coalition of varied cross sections of the local community with representation from local and county law enforcement, schools, probation department, elected officials and other community organizations.
The sole purpose of the organization is making and keeping Rush County Schools a safe and drug free environment for students.
During the most recent LCC meeting Kemker again brought up the idea of forming a committee to draft an emergency preparedness plan. The initial meeting to do so will be held at 10 a.m. May 9 in City Council chambers, 270 West 15th Street.
Members of the public are invited to attend.
