Comer enters race for sheriff

---- — Former Indiana State Police Lieutenant and Connersville District Commander, Steve Comer of New Salem, recently announced his candidacy for Rush County Sheriff.

Comer has pledged to use the knowledge and skills he has gained as a 33-year member of the ISP, both as an officers and communications manager, to provide a safe environment for all citizens of Rush County.

He said his decision to run was based on the caring nature of the people who live in the county. Having been raised in a rural faring community, he said he has witnessed tremendous acts of kindness expressed to others in the community.

“On several occasions I saw farmers, their wives and others from the community gather at the home of a farmer who, in one way or another, had fallen on hard times. Depending on the season, they came with their own equipment to plant, maintain or harvest that farmer’s crops, sometimes all in one day. They weren’t asked to or expected to be reimbursed, they just did it. I know these kinds of unselfish acts happened not only in the New Salem area, but in all parts of the county as well. Those acts of kindness have had a profound effect on my views about the character of people who live in Rush County. Being elected as sheriff would not only be an honor but also provide me the opportunity to give back to the community that has been a great place to live and raise a family,” Comer said.

Comer graduated from the 40th ISP recruit school in 1980 and started his career at the Connersville District. In 1986, he was assigned to a Field Pilot position in the departments Aviation Section flying a fixed wing aircraft in the eastern half of the state. In 1989, he was promoted to Corporal at the Connersville District, serving as one of the district’s duty officers. He was promoted to First Sergeant and Assistant District Commander in 2001. In 2007, he was promoted to Lieutenant and served as Commander of the Connersville District. During his tenure as Lieutenant, he was responsible for approximately 40 sworn and civilian personnel. Comer currently manages one of the six State Police regional Communications Centers which is located at the Versailles Post.

Comer is also a 1996 graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command which is a program tailored for law enforcement managers.

Comer is a lifelong resident of Rush County and has always lived in the New Salem community. He and his wife Julie have six children, five of whom still reside in Rush County. They also have 11 grandchildren with number 12 on the way.
