CONNERSVILLE — Connersville was only 100 years old when Alice Murphy entered the world in 1913.

As the city prepares to kick off its 200th birthday celebration this week, Murphy has already started celebrating by marking her 100th birthday last week.

A surprise birthday party drew more than 100 people, from distant relatives to former co-workers, who shared in reminiscing, taking photos and looking over picture boards documenting the long life of Murphy.

The last surviving member of a family of 10 children, Murphy was born in Laurel before her family moved to Connersville when she was in her teens.

The city has been her home ever since. She married, had four children of her own and, her daughter Debbi Hart says, now has too many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren to count.
