Fundraising event to help local food pantry

Candy Cottage decorating event at Rushville Pharmacy

As a means to generate needed funding for the Rush County Community Assistance Food Pantry, located at 109 East Third Street, the Rushville Pharmacy is hosting a Candy Cottage decorating fundraising event. Participates have already constructed and decorated their entries and are now asking Rush County residents to visit the Rushville Pharmacy and cast vote for their favorite creation. Each vote cost a quarter ($.25) and all proceeds generated by votes will be donated to the R.C.C.A. Food Pantry. Voting continues through Dec. 10. The top vote getting entry will receive a $50 gift certificate while the second place entry will receive a large candy cottage kit.

“It is all for a very good cause,” Shelly Bostic said.

The local food pantry began as an idea nearly eight years ago during January 2008 when a group of concerned citizens decided to combine the multiple food distribution efforts into one centrally located building.

The Rush County Ministerial Society became involved and thanks to a generous donation of the former Castle Theater building on East Third Street and following a number of volunteer labor hours and donated materials, R.C.C.A. Food Pantry became a reality in September 2009.

Currently nearly 9,000 household members have received supplemental groceries at the location and the need continues to grow. Donations from individuals, churches, organizations, state and federal grant monies help in keeping the shelves stocked.

“Tuesday we had 57 families visit in need of assistance and today (Thursday) we had a number of families arrive before we even opened our doors for the food distribution at 10 a.m.,” RCCA Board Chairman Don Heller said.

One-third of the Third Street location is used for distribution while the remaining two-thirds of the building is used as a storage and staging area.

All board members and workers are volunteers and are quick to add that the organization has benefited from strong community support since the beginning, with patrons coming from all walks of life. Some are recently laid off from their employment while others find the organization their only means to provide balanced food staples for their families on a more regular basis.

Rush County Community Assistance is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the last Saturday of each month.

Donations of food, money and manpower are always needed and very appreciated. For those in a position to assist, the pantry can be contacted by e-mail at RCCAFoodPantry@gmail.com.
