Small Steps to Health and Wealth kick off Saturday

Rushville Republican

RUSHVILLE — The Rush County Challenge for Small Steps to Health & Wealth™ will kick-off at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, in the Kenneth L. Earnest Family Conference Center at Rush Memorial Hospital. The six-week challenge is being held in conjunction with the national challenge sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service through Rutgers University. The Winter 2013 Challenge will run Jan. 13 – Feb. 23. By enrolling at both the local and national levels, participants will receive the extra motivation provided by working with their friends and neighbors in taking small steps toward a better life.

Basic weight and health assessments will be completed at the kick-off meeting. This will allow the participants to measure some of their progress in the health area over the six week challenge. Information will be provided to help participants benefit from this program.  Other local sessions will be held throughout the challenge with each one focusing on specific steps in the area of health and finances. Prize drawings will be held at each session which are currently scheduled for Jan. 26, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23.

The Fitness Initiative Team of Rush County is sponsoring the local challenge. Their mission is to promote a fit and active lifestyle for residents of Rush County. The Small Steps to Health and Wealth™ Challenge encourages participants to take five small steps in the area of health and five small steps in the area of finances each day for six weeks. By reporting their progress online they can chart their progress and compare how they are doing with others throughout the nation. By participating locally they can receive help and motivation from friends and neighbors. Paper versions of the charts will be available for those who are not on-line.

It is free. It will be fun. We should end up more fit both physically and financially. Register locally by submitting a SSHW Challenge Commitment Form to either Purdue Extension-Rush County or to the HR Department of Rush Memorial Hospital. Forms are available at or on Facebook at Partners for a Healthy Rush County. Many local employers will also have forms. Ask yours. You can also call the Rush County Extension Office at 932-5974.

You must also register online for the national challenge. Go to Select SSHW Online Individual Challenge and follow the directions to set up an account. After you have created an account select My Challenges and enter the Winter 2013 SSHW Challenge. Upon completion it will say that “You have been successfully registered in the challenge.” Call 932-5974 if you have questions.
