Village Post Office operational in Manilla

RUSHVILLE — Wednesday afternoon, the RushShelby Energy office in Manilla officially became home to the 35th Village Post Office (VPO) in the United States. Following a few brief remarks by Dave Sheets of RushShelby and the U.S. Postal Service’s Manager of Post Office Operations Carmen Jennings, a ribbon cutting was held.

A number of local officials and USPS personnel were in attendance for the event.

Sheets said the VPO provides a means to additionally service and be a convenience to local consumers in the Manilla area.

During 2011, the postal service introduced VPOs as alternative retail location for postal services and services in rural communities.

“I want to thank you for partnering with the U.S. Postal Service,” Jennings told Sheets and others in attendance.

VPOs are operated by local bushinesses and offer a variety of postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.

“We’re a locally owned cooperative and see ourselves as good neighbors in the community. Opening a VPO will provide service to local residents and our customers and means they can buy a book of stamps or pick up priority mail boxes while visiting the office,” Sheets said.

On a lighter note, RushShelby employees presented Sheets, who was instrumental in locating the VPO in the RushShelby building, an autographed photo of actor Frank Cady. Cady is best known for his portrayal of Sam Drucker, the operator of the general store and post master in Hooterville in the fictional world of the 1960s American sitcoms Petticoat Junction and Green Acres.
