Kill works way back in with winning Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota coach Jerry Kill is working his way back into the job after taking a leave of absence to better manage his epilepsy.

He’s not ready to return to the sideline. But he said confidently that he’ll soon be seizure-free.

Kill returned to his regular Tuesday news conference for the first time in four weeks. Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys remains in charge of the strategic decisions during the game.

Kill will watch from above in the coaches’ booth in the press box Saturday when Minnesota plays at Indiana, as he did the last two weeks, both wins for the Gophers. He said he’s superstitious and doesn’t want to change a system that seems to be working.

Notre Dame’s Achonwa out with a knee injury

SOUTH BEND (AP) — Notre Dame forward Natalie Achonwa is expected to miss more than a month with a knee injury.

Coach Muffet McGraw told the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/17WJCSs ) that Achonwa suffered a small tear and she is hopeful Achonwa will be back in four to six weeks. The 6-foot-3 senior who averaged 13.8 points and 9.5 rebounds last season missed nearly three weeks at the beginning of the 2011-2012 season with a torn meniscus.

McGraw said Kayla McBride has a sprained ankle and Ariel Braker is dealing with knee pain and were doubtful for Wednesday’s exhibition game against California (Pa.), but are expected to be ready for the Nov. 9 season-opener against North Carolina-Wilmington.
