Cameron ends 45-year career as RPD reservist

After nearly 50 years of volunteering his service to Rushville residents, Lt. Floyd Allen Cameron is putting a wrap on a 45-year law enforcement career.

Cameron began serving as a reserve officer with the Rushville Police Department in 1968.

In 2001, Cameron retired from the Chrysler Corporation, closing out a career of 37 years with the company. More recently, he and his wife, Connie, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July of this year.

Coinciding with the his tenure as a RPD reservist, Cameron has worked under six police chiefs: Bob Miller, Ron Cameron, Bob Bridges, Jim Trout, Tony Fudge and current chief Craig Tucker.

As well, he served under a number of mayoral administrations: Raymond Gibson, Joe Delon, John McCane, Sharon Bostic, Bob Bridges, Merv Bostic and current mayor Mike Pavey.

Throughout the years, his volunteer service to the community has not gone unnoticed. Cameron was recognized in 2005 by the National Reserve Officers Association when he was given the “Outstanding Service Award” by his peers, recognizing his more than 36 years of volunteer service to his city and to his country.

Then chief of police Fudge said that not only was Lt. Cameron a reserve police officer, but also a valuable asset to the department and an appreciated member of the RPD.

“There is a lot more to being a reserve officer than just putting on the uniform,” Fudge said at that time.

In 2010, the Rushville native was the recipient of President Obama’s “Call to Service Award” which is presented to volunteers. To be considered for the award, individuals must have completed more than 4,000 volunteer hours in their communities.

In 2012, Cameron was selected the RPD’s Reserve Officer of the Year.

“There is no doubt that Lt. Floyd Cameron’s leadership and service will be dearly missed by the RPD as well as the city of Rushville,” Chief Tucker said.

To honor his service to Rushville, a retirement reception will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 9 at the 201 Building in downtown Rushville. The public is invited to share and reflect on a career of dedication to the community Cameron calls home.
