DAR holds meeting

Rushville Republican

---- — Major Hugh Dinwiddie Chapter of the DAR met at 11a.m. at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown for the dedication placement ceremony of the DAR emblem onto the stone of Ruth Goodwin. Nine members attended the ceremony as well as Ruth’s daughter, Louise Baldock, and Ruth’s sister, Ilarose Cupp, which are both members. After the ceremony the members went to the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greenfield for lunch and the Chapter meeting. Ten members were reported overall. Dianne Taylor and Denise Akers were hostesses.

The meeting opened in ritual form lead by our Regent, Dianne Taylor. The National Defense was read by Sherry Rigney. Sherry read about a blind veteran, and determined woman, Cathy Champion. The President General’s message was read by Denise Akers. The subject was the Lynn Young’s projects, such as the solar Panel and enhanced bandwidth in the National Headquarters. Also, this past year was a record breaker for the DAR in new members. In 1921, the record for new members was 13,805. In 2013, the count was 13,906 new members. As of Jan. 1, 2014 the DAR membership is 177,049.

The minutes for the past months were read. The treasure’s report was given. Motion to approve as corrected and second was by Linda Ashwell and Vikkie Witham. A thank you note was received from the Sarah Winston Henry Chapter of New Castle for helping with the veteran in Spiceland and the Lap robes given for the veterans.

The Mary Ward Trust was discussed. It was discussed about not having a meeting in January and February of each year instead of just January and having a day trip in August. All these discussions were tabled for next meeting to discuss further.

Vikkie gave an update on her sister, Darlene Petry. Ilarose gave an update on her sister, Margaret Smith. Margaret was sorry she couldn’t make the ceremony at Glen Cove, but was happy we were doing it.

Money was collected for the Indian Scholarship fund. The members all sang “Happy Birthday” to Dianne. A motion to adjourn was presented by Louise Baldock and second by Vikkie Witham.

Next meeting will be at the Methodist Church in Knightstown at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Amelia Wyatt and Dianne Taylor will be hostesses.
