16th annual St. Patrick's Day celebration set for Saturday

Bagpipes, shamrocks and green beer, oh my!

The Rushville St. Patrick’s Committee will celebrate their 16th annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration Saturday. John McCane, Brian Sheehan and Dan Shanahan will again host a weekend of Irish fun and festivities. Last year, Rushville Mayor Mike Pavey signed a Proclamation recognizing the local Irish efforts to bring a better understanding of the Irish heritage for our Rush County resident of Irish decent.

Sixteen years ago, John McCane, Brian Sheehan and Dan Shanahan got together to share stories of their Irish heritage, reminisce and listen to Irish music. The group decided they wanted to share their history and allow others to do the same. Since those humble beginnings, the event has grown and for a number of years has turned into a community fundraiser. In the past, the St. Patrick’s Committee has raised funds for the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, Varsity Scholars, St. Mary Catholic Church Heat Fund, Habitat for Humanity, the Sheehan Cancer Care Center at Rush Memorial Hospital, the Riverside Park Amphitheater, The Rush County Community Foundation, and Changing Footprints.

Grand Marshall this year will be Heather Sheehan, who has been in every parade since the beginning. Sheehan will be honored for her inspirational journey fighting breast cancer. The parade will be at 3 p.m. Saturday. Anyone is welcome to participate. Line up behind Main Street Christian Church at 2:30 p.m. Route goes from 6th Street, down Main St., turn left at the Rushville Pharmacy, and empties into the Knights of Columbus where the party begins. Green and creativity are welcomed and appreciated.

Festivities will include music, Celtic Cornhole, Great Irish Raffle and much more. Tickets are $10 each. Charities this year include Riverside Park Concert Series, Heart of Rushville and Rush County Veteran’s Association. The St. Patrick’s Celebration will be held at the K of C and tickets are limited. Since tickets are limited, people are encouraged to call one of the organizers or visit the K of C to secure their ticket. The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. and will last into the night.
