---- — A report of fire in the electrical room of Arlington Elementary School shortly before 10 a.m. resulted in multiple departments being dispatched to the school.

According to Posey Township Volunteer Fire Chief Jeff Ernstes, the fire was contained to the electrical room that’s located at the rear of the single story building and was quickly extinguished.

“The fire was contained to an electrical panel in the maintenance room. We are venting the smoke out at this time. Not knowing what we were up against when the call went out, we asked for assistance from other departments,” Ernstes said.

Superintendent of Rush County Schools Dr. John Williams arrived on the scene shortly after the fire was reported and was quick to thank all of the responders and said that all the students were safe and accounted for.

“All the kids are safe and accounted for. The responders did an outstanding job,” Dr. Williams said after looking inside the maintenance room and speaking with fire fighters on the scene.

Erring on the side of caution, firefighting units from Rushville Township and nearby Morristown assisted and Rushville City was placed on standby in the event they were needed.

The fire of unknown origin was extinguished shortly after 10 a.m. and fire fighters used exhaust fans to remove smoke from the room and began venting other areas of the school.

As a result of the fire and resulting power outage, students received an early release Wednesday and as a result of necessary repairs, the school will remain closed Thursday.

Students were relocated to the nearby Arlington Christian Church, where school buses were dispatched and parents began arriving a short time later to return the youngsters to their homes.

It was learned Wednesday afternoon that a new transformer would be delivered to the school Thursday.

Parents and students will be notified by the school notification system as to when the school will reopen.
