Some rules to bear in mind:
- Always tell someone in advance where you are going and when you expect to return.
- When ice will permit ice fishing wear a life jacket. It will not only provide additional warmth but will keep you buoyant should you fall in the water.
- Children should always be supervised when on the ice.
- Do not consume alcohol when participating in outdoor activities.
Should you witness someone fall through the ice, do not run up to them, find something that can be extended to them such as a rope or ladder then pull them to you.
If you fall through the ice, turn toward the direction you came from and put your arms over the ice you fell through. Work your way forward by kicking your feet, once out of the water “do not attempt” to stand rather roll away from the hole in the ice.
