Suspended driver involved in accident

One injured

A slick driving surface led to an accident shortly after 1 p.m. Friday west of Carthage on CR 900N.

According to investigating officer Rush County Deputy Terry Drake, a westbound motorist, Joseph R. Horine, no age or city of residence given, momentarily lost control of his vehicle in the 8300 block of the county road as an eastbound 1989 Ford Aerostar, driven by Donald D. Allen, 30, of Charlottesville, approached. In his attempt to avoid a collision, Allen left the northside of the road and struck a RushShelby Energy pole.

The force of the impact injured a female passenger in the Allen’s vehicle, Jimi A. Hodge, 37, also of Charlottesville. Following treatment at the scene Hodge, was transported to Hancock Regional for unspecified injuries. The full extent of her injuries, although not life threatening, remained unknown at press time Monday.

After narrowly missing striking each other and following the collision of Allen’s vehicle with the power pole, Horine turned around and returned to the accident site to await law enforcements arrival. Allen’s vehicle sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene.

The investigation found that at the time of the accident, Allen was operating a motor vehicle after his driving privileges had been suspended. Although no reason was given for the suspension, it was learned Monday that a warrant has since been issued for Allen’s arrest on a misdemeanor DWS charge.

As previously reported in the Friday Jan. 3 edition of the Rushville Republican, law enforcement report an all too frequent occurrence of individuals driving a motor vehicle after their driving privileges have been suspended. Reasons for the suspended license are varied and can include: multiple driving infractions, failing to pay court imposed fines, failure to provide the court with proof of financial responsibility for a licensed vehicle and failure to appear in court to name a few.

The reinstatement process requires the infracting driver to not only take care of the financial obligation but also to make a trip to a BMV reinstatement center. The closest such facilities are located in Indianapolis and Richmond.
