BRMS eighth-grade basketball

The BRMS eighth-grade boys Black basketball team played in the St. Louis tournament at Batesville over the holiday break. The Cubs went 2-1 and won their pool.

The Cubs defeated the host squad St. Louis 55-27 to open the tournament. Seven Cubs entered the scoring column with at least six points, led by Jensen Wood with 11.

The Cubs then defeated North Decatur 39-32. Rufus Noe led the Cubs with 16 points and he was aided by five other players scoring in the contest.

The Cubs faced a taller Jennings County team in the title game. BRMS rallied to get within 26-20 with six minutes to play, but the Cubs could not overtake the Panthers for the title. Noe led the Cubs with nine points.

The eighth-grade Cubs have won five of their last seven games and travel to Connersville Monday.

Pacers co-founder, president DeVoe dies at age 83

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Chuck DeVoe, part of a group of businessmen who founded the Indiana Pacers, has died. He was 83.

Leppert Mortuary and Crematory Services funeral director Angela Johnson says DeVoe died Saturday. She did not know the cause of death. The Indianapolis Star reported family members said he died of melanoma. A moment of silence was held before the Pacers played the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

DeVoe was team president from 1969-74 and board chairman from 1974-75. Bill York, the longtime head of statistics, says the Pacers wouldn’t be in Indianapolis if DeVoe and his partners hadn’t been so dedicated to keeping the team in the city.
