---- — Public transportation became a local reality during January 2008 with the arrival of Ride Rush. Since that time, increases in ridership have been realized on a monthly basis, a trend that executive director Wanda Henderson feels will only continue.
During the first six months of 2013, 8,015 riders boarded one of the vehicles in the Ride Rush fleet and during July, August and September an additional 2,522 riders used the service.
According to Henderson, more and more Rush County residents are utilizing public transportation was a means to get to and from work, medical and doctor appointments and other excursions.
“For many individuals, this (Ride Rush) is their only means of getting from one place to another and back again,” Henderson said.
She continued by saying that during the past three months, the travel option logged 24,048 revenue miles and realized 1,505 revenue hours.
“It is about getting people from here to there in the quickest and safest manner. It is a valuable and economical service to the people of Rush County and although it is run out the senior center, it is not just a service for senior citizens,” Henderson said during the final Transportation Action Committee (TAC) meeting of the year.
During the meeting, the executive director said that on a daily basis, roughly 20 individuals use the local public transportation service as a means to get to and from their place of employment. A figure that is very encouraging not only from an employment stand point, but also a marked increase from a few years ago with Ride Rush began.
Although riders are required to schedule rides and pickups 24 hours in advance, Ride Rush drivers logged nearly 5,000 hours during the past nine months while traveling 75,000 miles with the final quarter figures not yet known.
Ride Rush is open Tuesday through Friday with scheduled rides are also available Monday’s even though the Rush County Senior Center and Ride Rush office, 504 West Third Street, is closed the first work day of each week.
