---- — Members of the Rushville City Parks Board met recently and although they could not conduct official businesses due to the lack of quorum, they met in the parks department’s newest shelter house located in Laughlin Park.
Parks director Danny Mathews said that the working relationship between all city departments too frequently goes unnoticed and unacknowledged by many Rushville and Rush County citizens, but not by himself. Mathews personally thanked a number of those from other departments responsible for the manual labor that resulted in the recently completed Laughlin Park shelter: city street department director Jimmy Miller, along with Kirk Widley, Jake Hadix and Johnny Woods and others of the city street department as well as employees of the Rushville Public Works as being instrumental in doing a lot of work on and around the shelter house.
“We now have heat, central air, a kitchen area and restrooms in a shelter house the entire community can be proud of. I feel these upgrades were well worth it. Now this shelter is an asset not only to this park, but to the community as a whole,” Mathews said.
Nearby neighbor Marvin Hedrick was also complimentary of the revamped structure.
“We as a community down in the west end are very pleased with the renovations. It makes everyone feel better about the park. It really looks good in here,” Hedrick said.
Tuesday’s gathering also served as the unveiling of the structure with a number of community leaders, local residents and Mayor Mike Pavey were on hand.
Although no formal action was taken by board members that were present, Mathews also asked that in light of the improvements that beginning in January 2014, the fees to rent the structure be increased by $25 to $100 as a means to help offset electricity and water bills.
“I feel this will put us in line with similar sized event facilities in the community,” Mathews said.
During the January city parks board meeting, the election of officers for 2014 will be held.
