Parks Board considers portable movie theater purchase

Although the opening of Waggoner Community Pool is still months away, during a meeting earlier this week, members of the Rushville Parks & Recreation Board acted on a request from pool manager Rita Kaster and approving Gina Dyer as assistant pool manager for 2014.

According to Kaster, the matter had been brought before the board during a 2013 meeting, when it was learned that then assistant manager Jean Kopf may not be returning for the 2014 season, at which time the board approved Dyer’s hiring. She said that her request Tuesday evening was to reaffirm the board’s earlier decision.

In an unrelated matter, Kaster said that due to weather related issues, she is considering extending the application process to hire pool staff. The pool manager said that due to the recent winter storms, a number of former staff members and possible applicants have been unable to submit applications. The board also approved extending the application deadline.

Board president Aaron Gurley next turned his attention to possible purchase of a portable movie theater. It is Gurley’s contention that if purchased, the theater would and could be relocated to different areas. He said initial inquires have been made to possibly purchasing a theater. According to Gurley, a one-day rental of the system he would like to purchase is $3,500 while the purchase price is $14,000. The theater includes an inflatable 20x11 foot screen, LED projector and a sound system.

“Presently, I have applied for a Rush Shelby grant, although I’ve not heard if it will be received,” Gurley said.

In a final matter, board members discussed the feasibility and a permanent location for a dog park. Two potential places were discussed as possible sites: Community Park located between East Fifth Street and Fort Wayne Road and the former sunken garden located in South Veterans Memorial Park.

Following a lengthy discussion, the board agreed that they would prefer to use Community Park as the possible site. The matter will be revisited at a future parks board meeting.
