Coats for kids given away Saturday

RUSHVILLE — Coats and warm jackets, both new and old, have been collected at a number of local locations in preparation for the 10th annual “Coats for Kids” give-a-way, The one-day event is hosted by the local Fraternal Order of Police. Coats are being given away free of charge to any Rush County youth in need of a good fitting warm winter coat.

The distribution will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the recently refurbished F.O.P. Building located behind the Rushville Fire Department, in the 200 block of East Second Street. During the past 12 months, F.O.P. members have volunteered a number of hours to make a number of improvements to the location.

Through a number of fundraising events and on-going trash bag sales, the F.O.P. financially assists a number of area youth sporting programs and teams as well as hosting an annual Christmas Party for area youth in need. Local and county elementary students in need are recommended to the organization and are treated to a lunch and holiday party in December.

For those in a position to financially assist the F.O.P.’s efforts, contributions can be dropped off at the RCSD or the RPD. Large trash bags can also be purchased at either location. The organization also recently announced that through an agreement with Jacobs Concrete, they are also selling lion statuettes similar to the large ones currently sold by the Rush County Chamber of Commerce. The smaller lions are designed for residences and weigh roughly 45 lbs. They are priced at $45 with monies being split three ways between RCSD, RPD and the F.O.P.

For inquiries regarding the Coat’s for Kid’s event, to become an associate member or to order a small concrete lion from the F.O.P., Dave Sliger can be contacted at the RCSD by calling (765) 932-2931 or Randy Meek at the RPD at (765) 932-3907.
