---- — Public Transportation became a local reality January, 2008 when a fleet of three vehicles took to area streets and roads picking up and letting off Rush County residents.

During the first six months of this year, 5,493 passengers boarded one of the now seven vehicles that operate out of the Rush County Senior Center, 504 W. Third Street, Rushville.

Rush County Public Transportation Director Wanda Henderson said recently that although operated out of the Senior Center, Ride Rush is not a service just for seniors.

Henderson said more and more county residents are using the service to go to and from places of employment, shopping, doctor and medical appointments and other areas of interest and necessity.

While riders are required to schedule rides and pickups 24 hours in advance, Ride Rush drivers logged 3,218 hours while traveling 48,469 miles between Jan. 1 and July 31 of this year.

Each quarter and year since beginning its service, Rush County’s public transportation has posted increases in ridership while providing quality service at a nominal price.

Fees currently in place are:

Zero to 10 miles, $2 adults, $1 child.

10 and 15 miles, $3 adults, $2 child.

15 miles or more $3.50 adult, $2 child.
