The Rushville Police Department is currently understaffed and in the hiring process to replace one officer that recently left the department.
Compounding the department’s overworked and short-handed staff is the loss of chief of police Craig Tucker from active duty for a undetermined amount of time. Due to an unexpected reduction of officers, Tucker and other administrative personnel in the department have returned to the streets to cover shifts. During a recent shift, Tucker was seriously injured while attempting to subdue and arrest an Arlington man, William P. Guffey, 44.
In a matter of moments after confronting Guffey, a skirmish ensued that left Tucker with a left arm injury that has since required surgery. The injury occurred in the 1300 block of North Main Street, when Guffey failed to comply with the officer’s request as he was being taken into custody. Officer Brent Campbell was also on the scene.
During the incident, both Tucker and Guffey ended up on the ground at which time the Arlington man continued to injure Tucker prior to officer Campbell’s and another individual’s intervention.
Guffey sustained what were described a minor injuries, and following treatment at Rush Memorial Hospital, was taken to the Rush County Jail. Guffey is facing charges of battery causing bodily injury (class “C” felony), battery on law enforcement (class “D” felony), resisting law enforcement (class “A” misdemeanor), disorderly conduct (class “A” misdemeanor), attempted suicide (class “D” felony) and battery (class “A” misdemeanor). A bond of $60,000 was set.
As a result of his injuries, Tucker recently underwent surgery at an Indianapolis hospital and has not yet returned to work on a full-time basis.
The RPD is in the midst of a hiring process to fill a void in its ranks left when one officer took a position with another community's department and another officer left the department. During a recent city council meeting, it was learned that one new officer is hoped to be hired in the coming months.
