Shelby County Players has just the ticket for parents and grandparents looking for a fun holiday event for the little ones. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs of the Black Forest” opens at 7 p.m. Friday and continues at 7 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 11 and 12, and at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 and 13 at Shelby Community Theatre, 16 S. Tompkins Street

Tickets for the show are $5 in advance for children and $6 at the door, and $10 in advance for adults and $12 at the door. They are available at Bernard Realty, 250 E. Broadway Street; Borchert Optometry, 273 W. Broadway Street; Mickey’s T-Mart, 748 S. Harrison Street; and The Shelbyville Antique Mall, 117 S. Harrison Street.

Although based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, many Americans are more familiar with the Walt Disney film that has delighted children and adults alike since 1937, but many other versions of Snow White exist. The stage production at Shelby Community Theatre was written by June Walker Rogers and makes use of humor to tell the tale of Snow White.

The beautiful, apple-cheeked princess lives a happy life until her father, King Absent Minded, takes a new wife, Queen Bella, an evil witch who is more laughable than frightening. She and her frantic servant, Maid Dim Witty plot to get rid of Snow White so that Bella can be the fairest in the land. When Snow White falls into a deep sleep after eating from the enchanted poisonous apple, it requires the help of her animal friends, the seven dwarfs of the Black Forest and a good-hearted prince to save her.

The dwarfs in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs of the Black Forest” are also unique and consist of their sensible leader Curly; triplets Hickory, Dickory and Dock; Weepy, the repetitious Echo Echo and musical Little Banjo.

Director Michaela Kruse is working with a cast of 22 adults, teenagers and children and a large backstage crew to prepare the production.

The next show at Shelby Community Theatre is Ken Ludwig’s “Leading Ladies,” directed by Lora Norris. Auditions are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and 13 at Shelby Community Theatre and the production is scheduled 7:30 p.m. March 5, 6, 12 and 13 and 2 p.m. March 7 and 14. Casting calls for five men and three women, ages 18 to 80.

SCP’s season ends with Horton Foote’s poignant drama, “The Trip to Bountiful,” directed by Cindy Houpt. Auditions are March 16 and 17, and performances are at 7:30 p.m. May 14, 15, 21 and 22, and at 2 p.m. May 16 and 23. Casting requires six men and three women.
